How Do Same-Day Crowns Work? Understanding The Same-Day Crown Process
To understand how same-day crowns work, it’s important to know how traditional lab-made crowns work. Traditional crowns require at least two appointments over a period of 2-3 weeks.
At your first appointment, your tooth will be trimmed and prepared for a crown. Then, dental impressions of your mouth will be taken and sent to a dental lab, where the crown will be made.
Then, the finished crown will arrive at your dentist’s office in a couple of weeks, and you’ll come back to have it placed on your tooth, which completes the procedure. Between your appointments, you must wear a resin temporary crown to protect your tooth until your final crown is attached.
CEREC same-day crowns are a bit different, because everything can be done in one appointment. First, your tooth will be trimmed and prepared by Dr. Amin, and then he will use a hand-held 3D scanner to take a 3D image of your tooth.
This will be sent into our in-office CEREC CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design/Manufacturing) machine. Dr. Amin will adjust and design a crown that fits perfectly into your mouth, and then the CEREC machine will trim the crown out of a solid block of porcelain in just a few minutes.
Once the crown has been built, Dr. Amin will check the fit to make sure it’s perfect. Then, the crown will be permanently bonded to your tooth. The entire process usually takes just 1-2 hours.
